The LORD will provide

About 2000 years before the birth of Christ. God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation even though he did not have a son. When Isaac was born, Abraham rejoiced. Yet when Isaac was a teenager, the Lord called on Abraham to take Isaac, his only son, the son that Abraham loved—to a mountain in the land of Moriah that God would show to him and offer him there as a burnt offering.

Abraham must have been grieved and confused at first; but he obeyed God and went to the place where they could see the top of the mountain from a distance. Abraham took the wood of the offering and placed it upon his son Isaac’s back. They walked on together.

Isaac noticed the wood and the fire and the knife in his father’s hand. He asked, “Where is the lamb” for the sacrifice, father. Abraham said, “God will provide Himself a lamb.” When they arrived at the place of sacrifice, Abraham bound Isaac’s hands and placed him on the wood and raised the knife. But the Lord stopped him and said He knew that Abraham truly loved the Lord since he had not withheld his only son from him. Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. He offered the ram in the place of Isaac and called the name of the place “The LORD will provide.”

One thousand years after Abraham, David would make that mountain his capital city. David’s son Solomon would build the temple there.  Two thousand years after Abraham named that place, John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”. God the Father sent His only begotten Son to earth to carry the wood of His sacrifice to the place where He was crucified.
