Grace – For we are His workmanship

“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

Humbling oneself before God is part of the blessed moment of salvation that is joined in that instant to repentance and faith. That instant—all of it due to the work of God—is the gift of God.

Cain was a farmer while Abel kept the flock. When they decided to approach God in worship, they both made an altar. At the beginning of human history these two altars anticipated all religions to come. Every religion finds its roots in either Cain’s altar or Abel’s altar.

Cain brought the best of his crops that he had grown by the sweat of his brow. Abel brought the best of his flock to his altar to offer them to God in simple faith hoping in the grace of God. But the Lord rejected the offering of Cain because sin cannot be atoned for by our labor. God accepted the offering of Abel’s altar because Abel came before the Lord in simple faith hoping in the grace of God.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” Ephesians 2:8-10.
