The Word of the Lord

The Mission

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me;
because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek;
he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all that mourn;”

Isaiah 61:1-2

Daily Devotional

December 15th

Just ask anyone today “What is Christmas about?”  You will get so many different answers.  How many of these answers have anything to do with Jesus?  Unfortunately not many.

Yes, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of our savior.  Is it more than this?  What does that actually mean?  If He is our savior, what is He saving us from.  What is His mission?  More than 700 years before the birth of Christ, Jesus spoke through the prophet Isaiah.  He outlined His coming mission in Isaiah 61. In Luke 4:18-21, Jesus spoke in the synagogue.  He stood up looked for the scripture in Isaiah and read it,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

Jesus was making the point that the first part of His mission is being fulfilled.  We are currently living in the time of the acceptable year of the LORD”.  What is coming next in His mission?  Simply look at the part of scripture in Isaiah 61 that Jesus didn’t recite in that moment.

“and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;” Isaiah 61:2 (KJV)

The acceptable year of the Lord will end.  Then comes the day of His vengeance.

God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.”

Nahum 1:2 (KJV)

Jesus came the first time, for us and for our salvation.  He is both our sacrifice and High Priest. Jesus is coming again as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to judge the world in righteousness.  That is His mission.

Jesus is coming.  Are you ready?
