The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel.
² To know wisdom and instruction;
to perceive the words of understanding;
³ To receive the instruction of wisdom,
justice, and judgment, and equity;
⁴ To give subtilty to the simple,
to the young man knowledge and discretion.
⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning;
and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
⁶ To understand a proverb, and the interpretation;
the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge:
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father,
and forsake not the law of thy mother:
⁹ For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head,
and chains about thy neck.

And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. ¹⁹ And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. ²⁰ And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. ²¹ And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

And God spake all these words, saying, ² I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. ³ Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.

For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like thee, glorious in holiness,
fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. ² Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) ³ That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
⁴ And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, ² Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. ³ But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. ⁵ But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; ⁶ And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. ⁷ Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, ⁸ This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. ⁹ But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
